Growing delicious soft fruits in Lancashire since 2002
All our produce is grown under high-efficiency glasshouses. Constructed by companies in the UK, our glasshouses use the latest glass technology based on Dutch-designed hydroponic engineering principles. Having the right location for our glasshouses gives us increased control over a number of factors that help deliver further efficiencies. These include site size and topography, climate, orientation and location, and staff access.
Natural pollination, the process of using bees to pollinate fruits and vegetables is one way to improve crop quality, increase yield and reduce labour. Introducing hives into a greenhouse can help growers maintain an environmentally friendly space. Because chemical pesticides will kill the bees before they can get busy, greenhouse operations must minimise or stop using these products prior to introducing the bees.
Fruits breathe CO2 and expel oxygen into the ambient atmosphere. We use sustainable biomass boilers burning woodchip wherever possible, but from time to time we need to use CO2 enrichment taken from natural gas, piped to the land from the nearest mains supply.
Supermarkets and consumers are asking for locally-grown fruit to be available during more of the year, with typical demand now extending from February to December. It is expected that Britain's exit from the European Union (Brexit) will demand more home-grown produce from the UK; making it imperative for growers to look at ways to increase production. The role of UK-based horticulture in contributing to the country's food sustainability is, therefore, more important than ever.
To meet increased consumer demand and contribute to the UK's need for food security and a sustainable supply, we are continually looking at ways to increase efficiency and optimise our growing, ripening and picking processes.
